AFRICAN WOMEN’S CLIMATE ASSEMBLY
DECLARATION OF THE SECOND WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICAN WOMEN’S CLIMATE ASSEMBLY
The second Women’s Climate Assembly was held from 24 – 28 September 2023 in Lagos, Nigeria. The overall objective of the Assembly was to strengthen and unify women-led struggles against dirty extractives and false solutions to the climate crisis in West and Central Africa and propose women-centred development solutions that support women, their families and their communities to enjoy a decent life and livelihoods in a time of deepening climate crisis.
More than anything this was a space in which grassroots women in communities impacted by extractives who are living the climate crisis daily constructed and facilitated sessions with the support and not the leadership of solidarity NGOs.
The Assembly was a feminist organising, solidarity, and learning convergence which deepened women’s leadership, knowledge, and movements across West and Central Africa. This was powerfully expressed through the assembly’s Declaration, reflecting the collective voices of the women and the 70 communities and organisations from 17 countries that they represent.
