Africans Rising Against Repression

Chega! Tosha! Sokwanele! Enough is Enough!

Every single week, 3 environmental defenders are killed for defending their lands, forests, waters & lives (Global Witness). In November 2020, twenty-three African organisations came together under the banner ‘Rise Against Repression’ with the aim of shining a light on repression against land and environmental defenders in Africa.

On International Human Rights Day, WoMin and our allies launched living tribute wall & online gallery – www.riseagainstrepression.org – with 20 cases from across the African continent. This powerful platform aims to remember, make visible, and honour the environmental and land rights activists and communities, with a focus on women, who have died or faced repression because they say NO to the large-scale extraction of natural resources.

This platform is just the start of an ongoing Pan African monitoring, action and solidarity focused specifically on land and environmental activists and communities facing repression, with an explicit focus on women.
