Rise Against Repression - Shining a Spotlight on Environmental Defenders

Shining a Spotlight on Environmental Defenders

Mam’Fikile Ntshangase. Ken Saro-Wiwa. Mama Nthuwa (Flower). Father Vincent Machozi. Sikhosiphi ‘Bazooka’ Rhadebe. The communities of Tete, Chiadzwa, North Mara and many, many more…

Every single week, 3 environmental defenders are killed for defending their lands, forests, waters & lives (Global Witness). In late December 2020, a wide range of African organisations came together under the banner ‘Rise Against Repression’, to spotlight twenty cases from across the continent in the form of an online tribute wall.

These organisations aimed to remember, make visible, and honour the environmental and land rights activists and communities, with a focus on women, who have died or faced repression because they say NO to the large-scale extraction of natural resources.

WoMin is pleased to make the Rise Against Repression tribute wall available for download. This publication shines a light on repression against land and environmental defenders in Africa and is part of ongoing Pan African monitoring, action and solidarity focused specifically on land and environmental activists and communities facing repression, with an explicit focus on women.
