Across the African continent, women activists are finding ways to mobilize, speak out against and demand action on injustices of water scarcity, violence, inadequate healthcare and other critical issues, and build effective responses to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/womin.africa\/an-activists-covid-19-resources-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;in solidarity with others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The novel coronavirus\u00a0pandemic\u00a0collides with many\u00a0other crises playing\u00a0out\u00a0across the\u00a0African\u00a0continent \u2013\u00a0\u201cclimate heating, environmental degradation, unemployment, rising poverty,\u00a0[water scarcity and food insecurity], and increased violence, specifically violence against women and civil conflicts in many countries\u201d.\u00a0Working class and peasant women in Africa\u00a0have been\u00a0hit particularly hard. Many rely on the informal economy to make a living, and play a big role as household food producers, caregivers, harvesters of water, energy and other basic goods. For organisations and movements, this current moment presents new challenges as well as opportunities for radical organizing and advocacy\u00a0in support of women\u2019s struggles for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In light of the many challenges communities and support organisations are facing in the context&nbsp;of&nbsp;COVID-19,&nbsp;WoMin hosted a webinar featuring&nbsp;activists from Sierra Leone, Senegal, Madagascar, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, South Africa, Uganda and Nigeria to share practical insights and exchange lessons around a critical question for many movements and organisations across Africa:&nbsp;\u2018How do we support women\u2019s organizing in a time of crisis?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Africa\u2019s mobile revolution &amp; C19 &#8211;&nbsp;SMS, WhatsApp&nbsp;&amp; more<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 28 countries across the continent implementing various&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/resources\/idt-4a11d568-2716-41cf-a15e-7d15079548bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lockdown measures&nbsp;<\/a>that restrict movement, enforce curfews and other restrictions, COVID-19 has presented new (but old) challenges&nbsp;for how we communicate with one another&nbsp;across distance.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/r\/mobileeconomy\/sub-saharan-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2019 report from GSMA<\/a>, around 50% of the sub-Saharan population (600 million) has&nbsp;a mobile phone subscription, and 39% of those have&nbsp;access to&nbsp;a smartphone.&nbsp;Across the continent,&nbsp;WhatsApp&nbsp;is becoming an important space for information-sharing, organising and&nbsp;strategising&nbsp;within communities. A&nbsp;major&nbsp;challenge&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/mobile-in-sub-saharan-africa-can-worlds-fastest-growing-mobile-region-keep-it-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the cost of getting online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobile phones have\u00a0offered an important avenue for activists to put out\u00a0alerts on service delivery challenges they face daily, report human rights abuses and gender-based violence cases. One\u00a0striking example is\u00a0the water scarcity crisis affecting\u00a0over\u00a024 communities across South Africa.\u00a0Women from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.safsc.org.za\/water-stressed-communities-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">water-stressed communities<\/a> like\u00a0Phola\u00a0in Mpumalanga\u00a0and Somkhele\u00a0in KwaZulu-Natal\u00a0communicate their challenges\u00a0via WhatsApp and SMS, use mobile\u00a0voice notes and regular\u00a0alerts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womin.africa\/a-cry-for-water-women-across-south-africa-demand-their-right-to-water-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to get their stories out<\/a>. Despite\u00a0the South African\u00a0government\u2019s\u00a0promises to ensure that these communities have access to water, many\u00a0still wait\u00a0in vain.\u00a0Working in solidarity with\u00a0the C19 Women\u2019s Solidarity Forum, community activists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womin.org.za\/c19-women%E2%80%99s-solidarity-forum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have taken their\u00a0issues directly to the Department of\u00a0Water and Sanitation<\/a>\u00a0(DWS), which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/speeches\/minister-lindiwe-sisulu-directs-officials-increase-pace-provision-water-during-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pledged to scale up the provision of water<\/a>\u00a0and has failed to live up to those promises. At the time of writing, DWS has only confirmed receipt of the letter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"A letter to the president demanding urgent attention to water challenges: Caroline Ntaopane\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EWP02oOCz6U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Development Bank\u00a0<a style=\"font-size: 18px; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\/news-and-events\/press-releases\/african-development-bank-group-unveils-10-billion-response-facility-curb-covid-19-35174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently set up a USD $10 billion COVID-19 response facility<\/a>\u00a0that will provide funding to governments and the private sector. But communities heavily impacted by development projects, like those of\u00a0Bargny, Senegal and San Pedro,\u00a0C\u00f4te\u00a0d\u2019Ivoire will likely\u00a0not benefit from any of those funds, which will go to big business and other interests. Social media\u00a0is an increasingly vital and vibrant\u00a0platform for advocacy and organising.\u00a0Following\u00a0a social media training workshop last year, women activists from these two communities\u00a0use Facebook\u00a0and WhatsApp to\u00a0speak out on the experiences of\u00a0fisherwomen and market women,\u00a0whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by COVID-19. Women share their experiences&nbsp;and&nbsp;sensitize their communities on how to prevent the coronavirus in local languages.&nbsp;Green Radio&nbsp;also&nbsp;encourages&nbsp;listeners\u2019 clubs so that&nbsp;women in communities&nbsp;can discuss different topics and call the radio\u2019s toll-free line to ask questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Kebetkachewomen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kebetkache Women Development &amp; Resource Centre<\/a> uses\u00a0poetry, song and radio plays to help educate\u00a0communities in the Niger Delta\u00a0on COVID-19.\u00a0Via WhatsApp,\u00a0vox\u00a0pops\u00a0and other\u00a0tools, women activists share songs that\u00a0dispel myths about the disease and\u00a0confront the government for lack of investment in healthcare infrastructure and failure to fulfil other obligations to the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, in Sierra Leone, where the experience of&nbsp;the 2014 Ebola outbreak&nbsp;holds important lessons,&nbsp;women are once again the \u201cfrontrunners\u201d in the dissemination of information and sensitisation efforts&nbsp;using simple plays, posters and social media, according to Esther&nbsp;Kandeh&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Women-on-Mining-and-Extractive-Wome-Sl-1815623998660179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women on Mining and Extractive (WOME)<\/a>.&nbsp;While many rural families do not have access to television or phones, community radio has&nbsp;also&nbsp;proved a useful tool.&nbsp;As with other organisations participating in the exchange, WOME and&nbsp;Kebetkache&nbsp;are coordinating food, health and monetary support during the lockdown period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water&nbsp;&amp; food justice front &amp; centre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For&nbsp;many,&nbsp;it\u2019s basic needs that are&nbsp;front and centre&nbsp;as communities face&nbsp;catastrophic&nbsp;food insecurity, water and energy shortages. In Madagascar, communities living in the mining concessions of the Base Toliara Project, approximately 1100km south-west of the capital, have very little access to&nbsp;COVID-19 information and updates.Chronic malnutrition affects&nbsp;much of&nbsp;the local population, with women and children hit hardest. So far, the leaders of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/615804568472012\/permalink\/3105462519506192\/?__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARBmc4hicEG-i3DSF_6Zg5hE_VXpl21VwwX3IeOavOrAbFl2x_a4FraWEohhhTgiJOb7pOuebIG5bDitcy-CCCbiPOxNEwKnBRA_GD24em_IWvn7pQqzR9PQA11Cw14F7Uusk_eZYEAzud7HtODKaLK7XmtawabkR2yXhubiupLeyRiEJExOt2WyEiDGQz0lFMBbMOH2GTgt7ZmJZyK7EQJqEPg-vAFN4W3J4cK0Mg&amp;__tn__=-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FARM&nbsp;(Femme en&nbsp;Action Rurale de Madagascar)&nbsp;have organised<\/a>&nbsp;sensitization sessions in 12 local communities&nbsp;with support from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/craadoi\/?__tn__=%2CdK-R-R-R&amp;eid=ARDoPUk4y1qLY1Xno9LvMZjRlI1RnysO1nOLAjUfzZ2g9Qq5VjjHrw-xzMoZ4phDRA4lucD8KGdLS2OP&amp;fref=gs&amp;dti=615804568472012&amp;hc_location=group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CRAAD-OI<\/a>.&nbsp;They make use of posters translated into local language&nbsp;to&nbsp;share key&nbsp;information about preventative measures against COVID-19.&nbsp;During these sessions, they\u2019ve also distributed food packs containing spirulina&nbsp;(a natural food supplement based on seaweed, well-known for its ability to strengthen immune&nbsp;defences&nbsp;and largely used for the fight against malnutrition in Madagascar) and 4800 pieces of soap to 1200 women.&nbsp;On top of this, they\u2019ve set&nbsp;up funding so&nbsp;women&nbsp;can&nbsp;build their&nbsp;water reserves&nbsp;and a call alert system to report cases of gender-based violence (none have been reported thus far).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confronting violence &amp;&nbsp;state repression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of providing us with basic support, they dumped the army on us,\u201d says Caroline&nbsp;Ntaopane&nbsp;of&nbsp;the situation in South African communities, \u201cand the army is violating the rights of people.\u201d&nbsp;Militarisation and violence are on the rise in many&nbsp;African&nbsp;countries as governments employ repressive tactics to&nbsp;enforce lockdown measures.In Zimbabwe, small markets&nbsp;and people trying to make a living&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/inside-covid-19\/2020\/04\/05\/police-officers-zimbabwe-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have come under attack<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;often violentraids&nbsp;by police and the army. In&nbsp;Penhalonga, a gold mining community located 20 kilometres north east of Mutare, women make up 90% of the artisanal miners in the area and&nbsp;have sustained their families on artisanal mining for many years. The lockdown has forced women artisanal miners to depend on food support from government. However,&nbsp;the selection of beneficiaries of the government support is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnrgzim.org\/women-hard-hit-by-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">often politically controlled<\/a>.&nbsp;Many of these&nbsp;artisanal miners&nbsp;\u2013 who cannot work at night like their male counterparts due to risks and insecurity \u2013 are&nbsp;now forced to engage in alternative economic activities&nbsp;that include working&nbsp;on&nbsp;other people\u2019s fields for a \u2018wage\u2019 of maze grain.
